Better security increases property value and reduces crime

The holiday season often sees a rise in property crime; people tend to lower their vigilance and properties are unoccupied for periods of time. Perhaps now is a good time to consider a few safeguards for your property.
Security features - a good security system is not just a safeguard, but a selling point and will also bring down your insurance premiums. Heavy duty burglar bars, good perimeter security, cameras and an alarm system linked to armed response all add value (especially to people from Jo'burg!).
Always arm your security system when you leave your house and check the system bi-annually to ensure that it is up to date.
Power failures - with load shedding once again affecting our daily lives and property, it is advisable to look into installing a back-up battery system if you don't already have that. Consider lighting up dark or dense areas in your garden with solar lights so that these are not affected by power outages.
Neighbourhood Watch and Street Committees - please join your neighborhood watch, even if you do not patrol (although that is very welcome).
Insurance - there is no better time than right now to scrutinise your insurance cover and the conditions for your property, the contents and your valuables. Be sure to read the fine print, especially insofar as certain high value items are concerned.
Valuables - consider storing valuables in a bank safety deposit box, especially when you are away. Add to this any important documents and back-up computer drives to safeguard information, especially if you have a business.
Avoid routine - mix up your habits, especially regular activities such as leaving for the gym. Always create the impression that someone is home such as leaving lights on at night for example. When away for an extended time, consider getting a house sitter or someone to do a regular check up on the property.
Bin days - do not put your bin out at night as it provides cover for criminals who can even use it to scale your garden wall. Only put it out on the morning of collection and be sure to take it in promptly as criminals will think that you're not home if you leave it out too long and your house will be a soft target. Be responsible about disposals and rather donate goods of value to a recognised charity instead of placing it out with your bin as it encourages vagrants into the area which again provides cover for criminals.
Cybercrime - criminals are getting craftier by the day and cybercrime is on the rise. Ensure your home wireless network is secure and regularly change the password. Do the same with any computers used at home including securing networks used such as email and bank applications.
Emergency contacts - have a list of emergency contacts handy in your home as well as in personal mobile phones so that you can react fast in time of need. If you provide a friend or family member as your security contact when you go on holiday, remember to also alert them.
