Compulsory New Electricity Meters Rolling Out in Cape Town

Residents are reminded of the City of Cape Town programme of replacing all the old electricity meters, with new meters. This only applies to the suburbs where the City of Cape Town supplies electricity.

Note that all electricity meters, both credit and pre-paid, are owned by the City, and the replacement is compulsory in City-supplied areas. The replacement is free of charge. The new prepaid meters are replacing the old, single and three-phase electricity credit meters.

The benefits of the new meters are numerous. The new Electricity Meters come with the latest technology for more accuracy and reliability. This will ensure more accurate readings, greater usage control, as well as cost management.

The installation of the new Electricity Meters is part of the City's overall infrastructure upgrade as the old meters still have old technology. The new meters will help customers to better manage their electricity usage, and provide accurate readings.

The City's MMC for Energy Xanthea Limberg has assured that residents will benefit from the new meters, and that the cost of electricity will remain the same for the old meters and the new prepaid meters. She also assured that the meter only measures electricity usage, and does not consume any electricity.

As the new installations are rolling out, the City will notify residents when their area is due for replacement. The contractor will do a letter drop to residents in the particular area to arrange a suitable time to do the installation. Residents can verify the supplied reference number by calling the City's Call Centre on 0860 103 089.

Residents are always cautioned to verify the identity of the contractor before letting anyone into their property. If they are unsure, they should call the above number to clarify. All contractors of the City of Cape Town must carry their IDs which indicate that they are City contractors. According to the City of Cape Town, "the ID card must display the City logo, the name and surname of the staff member or mandated contractor, and must contain an embedded photo of the staff member or mandated contractor."
