International Day of Yoga Event | Cape Town

Category Lifestyle

2014 was a landmark year for yoga. It was then that the United nations declared that each year, June 21st would be dedicated to the annual celebration, teaching and practice of yoga. An entire day of health and relaxation. Soon after, the first Cape Town International Day of Yoga was hosted in 2016, organized by the well-known instructor Joelle Sleebos. Since then, the support for the upcoming event has only grown.

"Yoga is about union, so let's bring all the different yoga communities in Cape Town and surrounding areas together to practice as one," said Yoga Community Cape Town, who are hosting the International Day of Yoga Cape Town on Facebook. The event is set to take place on Saturday the 22nd of June, a day after the official Interntional Day of Yoga, and is being held in the center of town at 14 Hope Street.

Yoga combines meditation, deep breathing techniques, and hones in on specific muscle groups to create a workout experience that is both relaxing and, some might be surprised to learn, physically challenging. The health benefits attributed to practicing yoga regularly are vast, some of which being:

  • Improved flexibility, posture, and strength
  • Reduced stress
  • Weight loss
  • An increase of energy
  • Mindfulness
  • Increased concentration
  • Better breathing

The International Day of Yoga is a supporter of the Earthchild Project. Participants will not be asked for an entry fee, but rather a donation to the project. The main aim of the Earth Child Project is to educate children of the importance of connecting with themselves, one another and their environments through yoga and environmental preservation. Considering the spirit of the event, yogis will most likely be thrilled to support a cause of this nature.

It would seem as though attendees of the event are going to be given every opportunity to stop and breath, considering the variety of workshops that have been planned from early morning until late evening.
